I found these instructions to be most helpful on my hunt to get rid of an extension that had a greyed out uninstall. Our great friends at Microsoft almost made these instructions useless to me until I spotted they do something other than suggested here.

It was to do with removing the .NET Framework One-click Assistant. I eventually caught up with the evil bastards by looking for ":name" without the quotes to reveal that they do not operate their extensions or add-ons like everyone else does; that abides by the conventions and rules. So to get rid of the wretched .Net Framework thing that doesn't work anyway do the following:

Inside the extensions folder indicated in these instructions look for one that simply says extensions.rdf. Then look inside with a search F3 for ":name" and you will be sure to spot ha ha .NET Framework Assistant thingy.

Hopes this helps the people out there who are still in desperation. Be in desperation no longer and always keep eye out for things that don't quite look right!
