The divx codecs is the problem it’s not read by vista

1. Just uninstall divx
2. uninstall and all codecs.

t===he divx codec in the divx package corrupts the codecs and vista can’t read it after corrupting it==

3. reinstall codecs but not the one from divx.

!!!!!but don’t use an divx codecs!!!!!

just install the divx PLAYER Only!

NO divx codec the problem is the divx codec not compatible or conflicting with windows vista. i wouldnt recommend going to system as changing settings it is dangerous

Followed method one…
Click Start.
In the Search Box type CMD
Right click on the Command Prompt icon.
Click Run as Administrator.
In the Command Prompt black window type: regsvr32 %windir%/System32/vbscript.dll and hit Enter.
The system will return with the following message: DLL Register Server in C:\Windows\System32/vbscript.dll has been successful.
Now click Start.
Click Computer on the right.
Click Folder and Search.
Click the View tab.
Tick Always show icons never thumbnails.

Worked fine till I got to Click Folder and Search…..what the heck???

I looked for 15 minutes for a folder and search place…could not locate one……could you be a bit more specific as to what to do…Im using Vista32bit, there is no folder and search…of course there is a search box at the top right…but no folder and search place anywhere…that I can see.

Thanks in advance for any help to get this COM surrogate fixed…

Just for info, if all the above methods still do not solve the issue and if you are using Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, you may probably need to exclude COM Surrogate from the list under KIS settings.

Yeah Hi. I have been having the “COM Surrogate has stopped working” problem on and off for monkeys years now, or atleast with Vista. Now I have had the problem in 7 too. I do, though, have a solution for both that may work for you too: In vista I viewed icons as “list”, this seemed to do it for me in Vista, yet when I turned to 7, I had the “COM Surrogate has stopped working” warning in all views. So I realised I had not had the problem before I installed DVDFab6. I uninstalled DVDFab6 and now I can view my AVIs in 7 without any problems. I hope this helps, Dom.
