Every time a software hangs or crashes in Windows Vista, the system prompts you to use Windows Error Reporting (WER) in order to send information to Microsoft about such a failure. In case you don’t want to use this nagging feature, here is a simple trick on how to disable it.
- Click Start.
- Click Run… and type gpedit.msc
- Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Error Reporting.
- Double click on Disable Windows Error Reporting.
- Done
This trick doesn’t work on Windows Vista Home and Premium, since they don’t have the command: gpedit.msc. To disable the WER option on these Windows versions, just follow the following trick:
- Click Start.
- Type Problem Reports in the Search field and press Enter.
- Click Change Settings.
- Click Advanced Settings.
- Click Off under Advanced Settings for problem reporting.

Thanks I have been searching for quite a long time on how to disable error reporting because of the huge amount of WER files in my computer (take up 1 GB) and your post really helped because I am using Windows Vista Home Premium.

Oh thank you. I was getting sick and tired of that. Let MS waste their own time. I would think these bugs would have been caught long before now. Three of the errors in my log were for IE 8.
