Being in a Private Mode while surfing the Internet is a must nowadays, above all if you surf from a public computer. But even in your house is safer to surf without leaving any fingerprints (anonymously), because you don’t want your geeky children find out the number of your credit card and use it to buy one hundred hamburgers from McDonald! A nice solution to this issue is use the excellent Google Chrome, which has got among its features a nice Incognito Mode. Anyway if you don’t like the idea of using Chrome because you like Firefox better, here is a little trick which can save you from a lot of distress.
- Open your Firefox (3.x and further versions).
- In the Search Bar type about:config
- A message followed by a button saying “I’ll be carefull. I promise!” should appear. Click on it.
- Type browser.privatebrowsing.autostart in the filter field.
- Double click on the value above and set it True.
- Next time you will open your Firefox it will be in Private Mode!
- By the way. If you think that this trick is too difficult to accomplish, here is a nice free add-on available for all Firefox versions which cleans your Red Fox in a couple of seconds.
If instead you are still stuck on Internet Explorer, here is a trick to clean it from the command line.

I went into about:config, however, there is no listing for browser.privatebrowsing.autostart.
My firefox version is 3.0.5 running on Windows XP Sp3

Did you type browser. privatebrowsing. autostart in the filter field?
January 8th, 2009
Yes. I also just typed in just “browser” in the filter field to get all of the “Browser” entries. There were “browser” entries, but no entries for “browser.privatebrowsing.autostart”. No entries for “Browser.private…”.

I did find some privacy settings, but I cannot copy them to past them here. I could take a screen print an past it to a word document and email it, I would need an email address to do that.

If you dont have such a value try installing this simple addon:

OK, here is another solution. Thanks for pointing out by the way. If you dont have such a value try:
about:config
I’ll be careful. I promise
Now, right-click on the window and select:
New
Boolean
At this point create the new value: browser.privatebrowsing.autostart and set it true. Let me know. Apparently, a lot of people found this solution satisfactory.

I was able to add the value. Now that I have the value in the about:config file how do I know that it is working?
January 12th, 2009
I don’t have this file on my new version of Firefox. Does me no good at all.

OK, now that I’ve added the parameter is there any easy way of toggling it on and off. I don’t want to have to go into about:config every time. Is there is script I could hang off a custom button I put on the toolbar?

How about a java script that I could store in a bookmark. You know something along the “Google Anon” java sript that resets your google userid so you don’t have a consistent GUID for all of your queries:
javascript:x=’Nothing’;y=’preferences’;try%7bif(confirm(‘OK:%20Zero%20it\n\nCancel:%20Do_’+x+’_(e.g._already_zeroes?)\n\n’+unescape(document.cookie.replace(/;/g,’\n’))))h=location.host.match(/\.google\.((off|com?)(\…)|..|com)$/)%5b0%5d;document.cookie=’PREF=ID=00
