I tried to follow the steps above, but I get the message 'Task Scheduler service is not available. Verify that the service is running.' - what does this mean?! How do you find out if there are conflicts with drivers??

I would also add, there is a great tool to help uncover sneaky little trojan like conflicker. It is free, no cost at ALL. It doesn't fix the problem it finds, it just lets you know there is one. It's called svchost process anaylzer.

All goes fine until the very last step: the middle pane reads 'RACAgent', not 'RACTask'....any ideas? And your directions were very clear, thanks!!

1) Try to see if you have conflicts in your drivers. Some users has reported that, by uninstalling a VSO driver named pcouffin.sys in the device manager, he managed to solve the issue.
2) Try to scan your PC for viruses or spyware. Sometimes the error is triggfered by a virus.
3) The issue with this problem is that it is triggered by a lot of different causes so, finding the right one might be a real, royal pain in the butt!

Disabling RAC cannot work. It cant stop notifications. Even if you get rid of the NT 'notify' folder in the registry, the message will still pop up. The only diff is it wont interfere with the program, it'll just ask you to close the program - repeatedly - annoyingly.

Just get rid of vista - all versions are crap.
