The Notification Area in Windows 7 is nothing else than the old, good system tray. In Windows 7 this Notification Area holds and hides, by default, all those inactive, unused and unwanted icons. Here is a simple but effective trick which allows you to show or hide these icons at will.
- Click on the arrow in the Notification Area
- A small window containing all the hidden icons should appear. Inside it, click Customize.
- Alternatively to gain access to the Notification Area customization, click on Control Panel and click on the Notification Area Icons icon.
- If you always want to show all icons and their notifications, just tick Always show all icons on the taskbar located at the end of the option pane.
- If you want to show all icons and their notification, just untick Always show all icons on the taskbar.
- Now, for each icon, click on the Behaviours drop down menu and select the behaviour you want to apply. In this case you will select Show icon and notifications.
- If you want to hide an icon and its notifications, untick Always show all icons on the taskbar at the end of the option pane, click the Behaviours drop down menu and select Hide icon and notifications.
- If you want to restore everything back to factory state, click the Restore default icon behaviors link and press OK.
