While trying to install/uninstall applications from Windows 7 by using the well-known Windows Installer, or even while trying to update the operating system by using Windows Update, the system could get stuck or crash causing Windows Explorer or even Windows Installer itself to give the user the following error messages: “Windows Explorer has stopped working” - “Windows Installer has stopped working”.
Windows 7, unable to find a proper solution to this issue, will go on with its messages, returning after a while with another dialog box containing this cryptic sentence: “Windows is checking for a solution to the problem…” followed by “Do you want to send more information about the problem?”. Here is the hack to fix this errors.
- Click Start.
- In the Search Bar, type regedit and press Enter.
- Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
- In the right pane delete this subkey: MachineThrottling
- Turn your computer off and back on for the change to take effect.

I’ve had a similar problem with Windows Explorer quiting, with my Compaq Presario running 32-bit Vista. When I browsed in Explorer eventually Explorer would quit. I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 hoping the problem would go away. It didn’t and seems to have worsened to the point that it sometimes quits in seconds of opening a Windows Explorer window. I ran Windows in safe mode, and the problem went away. So I went through and turned off all services using MSConfig.exe, and then started turning blocks of services back on, working from A up. Wouldn’t you know it, the problem didn’t return until I got into Ws. I believe I’ve narrowed it down to two–either Windows Event Collector or Windows Error Reporting Service. With both of them currently turned off while every other service is allowed to run again, I haven’t had Explorer quit for the last hour–and I’ve been abusing it best that I can. Any idea why either of these services would be causing Windows explorer to quit? An what one should do (other than leaving one or both turned off)? Thanks.

P.S. on my last entry — My computer didn’t have any MachineThrottling subkey on the registry path mentioned above. So that fix wouldn’t work in my case.

P.P.S. I take it back (after sleeping on it). Windows Error Reporting Service is turned off, so I hid the messages but didn’t resolve the problem. Start over again.

I tried your “How to fix “Windows Explorer has stopped working” in Windows 7″, but when I reach step 4 “In the right pane delete this subkey: MachineThrottling” (in DisabledSessions) I have nothing to delete nor can I open the folder…
