windows 7While trying to install/uninstall applications from Windows 7 by using the well-known Windows Installer, or even while trying to update the operating system by using Windows Update, the system could get stuck or crash causing Windows Explorer or even Windows Installer itself to give the user the following error messages: “Windows Explorer has stopped working” -  “Windows Installer has stopped working”.

Windows 7, unable to find a proper solution to this issue, will go on with its messages, returning  after a while with another dialog box containing this cryptic sentence: “Windows is checking for a solution to the problem…”  followed by “Do you want to send more information about the problem?”. Here is the hack to fix this errors.

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Search Bar, type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
  4. In the right pane delete this subkey: MachineThrottling
  5. Turn your computer off and back on for the change to take effect.

Please, check comments below, even older ones. A lot of users posted how they managed to solve this issue!

i have a hp dv4-1427nr got the windows 7 upgrade from vista, i am pissed, ive tried everything from fresh install to factory restore then upgrade, followed the directions perfectly, i am still having this problem, i am at the point i am ready to learn a new OS this is rediculous. they should have stuck with windows xp, windows 7 is fucking trash, how hard is it to install an new OS on a laptop without getting this not responding message, it has to be windows explorer because EVERYTHING locks up, not just a specific program, my computer, control panel, anything that is open when it decides to not respond becomes unresponsive, i think i just have to revert to the factory vista, windows 7 sucks balls if it cant upgrade itself from vista

    This solves the problem:
    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

I got a new gateway dx4300-11 2 weeks ago with windows 7 installed. Yesterday I started to get the dreaded “Windows Explorer has stopped working” message. After reading about how common it has become on the web I tried the solution from 4vip.ro where you run sfc/scannow. So far, so good. No problems have yet resurfaced. I miss my XP:(

  6. Mavirk Says:

I tried every thing listed above and none work for me. scf found no problems. malwarebytes found nothing. regedit – no subkey called MachineThrottling is available to delete. ???

Try this web site for a fix to your problem

  8. Roo Says:

Like Mavirk i too had no luck until i ran malwarebytes. It found one bad key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoActiveDesktopChanges
i have deleted it successfully and am NOT sure YET if it fixed the problem. I will let you guys know. For me the windows explorer stops working when i right click or open any folders…only after my computer has been running for few hours. It doesn’t happen for few hours after a fresh restart or login. so i will know at the end of the day if deleting this one key fixed the problem or not.

  9. Roo Says:

Ok so it DID NOT fix the problem. I have been searching the web for a long time, hoping that someone will soon post a cure but it has not happened. I am going back to 32 bits. I haven’t figured out the cause of this problem. Maybe its just one non 64 bit program that i am running or something else but trust me that I have tried everything on this page + clean boot and ALL other remedies suggested online but nothing has worked.
PS. 32 bit was a lot faster and non lagging then 64bit + it has a folder locker, windows explorer crash never occurred on it and i don’t have to search for special 64bit drivers and programs…which are hard to find (like drivers for epson printer)….So i am done finding a cure for this shit.
