How many times has it happened to you to wish to use a certain software for your computer needs only to find out that it is not for free and, adding insult to injury, it  costs a lot of money? Of course you can browse the Internet looking for something cheaper or for free, but if you are not a seasoned surfer who knows what to look for, your quest could take a lot of time with the only result to get a crappy application full of commercials and bloatware. If you want to get the best, free alternatives to expensive software I have got the right solution for you.

Alternativeto.net is a wonderful website containing the best free alternatives to expensive software. The website is organized in different categories. You can select applications on the base of your software (category available: Windows, Mac, Linux, Online application), or if you prefer you can select the software you are looking for on the base of: Most views, most likes or recent. The way it works is really simple. Just type the name of the paid or shareware software you are interested in and Alternativeto.net will fetch its best freeware alternative available on the Web! Reading from the website: “AlternativeTo is a new approach to finding good software. Tell us what application you want to replace and we give you suggestions on great alternatives! Instead of listing thousands of more or less crappy applications in a category, we make each application into a category. Think of it like forever evolving blog posts about good alternatives to the software that you’re not satisfied with. And the “blog posts” are generated by you through suggestions, comments and votes.”

I tried one of the alternatives to Photoshop. Interesting, but I didn’t know what I was doing. I did notice that the .jpg came up in hi-def, something that I’ve never seen before on this machine.

There seem to be a lot of choices provided and it would take a lot of searching to find a worthwhile replacement, but I’m sure there is something out there that will at least fill your needs.
