While we are all waiting for the upcoming release of the WordPress 2.9, the WordPress team has released the new version 2.8.5 aiming to clean some “dirty code” and solve a couple of security issues. It is highly reccomended that all sites are upgraded to this new version of WordPress in order to have the best available protection.
WordPress 2.8.5 can be considered a mid-release between an old version and an upcoming new one which will mark a deep change in the most famous Content Management System (even though such as acronym is not correct for WordPress). In our case, the new version, as stated by the team which worked on it, is an hardening release aiming to solve bugs and security flaws. Here is what’s new in WordPress 2.8.5:
- A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
- Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
- Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
- Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.

I don’t understand why they released the new version so quickly after the last update 2 months ago.
I don’t see any changing in this new version. It’s not really necessary to upgrade.
