windows 7Sometimes it may happen that the recycle bin icon in your Windows 7 desktop gets stuck for no apparent reason. It basically keeps showing you a full (or empty) bin. Usually, it is sufficient to refresh your desktop to solve the issues. If you want everything to run the way they are supposed to, here is a simple hack to restore and fix the recycle bin icon once for all.

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Search Box, type regedit and press Enter.
  3. If the UAC prompt window appears, just click  Yes.
  4. In the registry, locate the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft /Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer /CLSID/ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}/
  5. In the right pane, click the Default subkey a couple of times.
  6. Its value should look like this: %YourUsername%\Icons\defaulticonname.ico
  7. Simply add at the end defaulticonname.ico a comma and a zero (,0) so that, after the modification you will have something like this: defaulticonname.ico,0 This will reset your bin icon.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Now, repeat point number 6, 7  and 8. This time you will have to look for the following strings:
  10. %YourUsername%\Icons\empty.ico
    %YourUsername%\Icons\full.ico

  11. Don’t forget to append a ,0 after the strings!
  12. Exit the registry.
  13. Restart your computer for the change to take effect.
