googletalkGoogle Talk application is  minimalist. It doesn’t offer you a lot of buttons to play with. For example, there is not any way to format or change the text. Recently, while using this excellent chat application I was in need to change the color, size, font of what I was writing. Apparently, there was no way to do it. Here is a couple of tricks I found in the Internet which will add some nice effect to your Google Talk chat sessions!

If you wish to write your message using a bold effect, add asterisks before and after the sentence. For example, type * Web Talk, concise news* to have the words in bold.

If instead you wish to write your message in italic, add the underscore character at the beginning and at the end of the sentence. For Example, type _Web Talk, concise news_ to have the words in italic.

Has anyone found any other hidden formatting tricks for google chat? Is it possible to add a ‘soft carriage return’ like other chat clients to make lists in a message?

@rodney — you can do a soft return using shift and enter , hope that helps.
