desktop.iniThe file called Desktop.ini is a special file which, by default,  is hidden. The regular user has no way to access it. Such a file is placed by the operating system itself in each folder and specifies in what way to display and show the folder. Sometimes, after flumbing among Windows Settings, the user might turn on a special option which shows hidden folders and files in the operating system and that’s exactly when the mysterious file appears! So , let’s see if you can safely delete the Desktop.ini file without getting any trouble.

First of all let me say that if you don’t want to see this file anymore you should consider to turn off the feature which shows hidden stuff in your PC. To so follow this easy tutorial:

  1. Open the Windows Explorer window.
  2. Click Organize.
  3. Click Folder and search options.
  4. Now, simply click the View tab and, under Advanced Settings menu, click the Don’t show files, folders or drive radio button.
  5. Click OK for the change to take effect.

If instead you can not stand the Desktop.ini file and you wish to remove it for good, simply right click it and and delete it.  It is quite safe to delete it the “old” way. Just keep in mind that your Windows might rebuild it as soon as it needs it!
