The major issue and risk about Short URL and URL shortener service is that you can not really see where the short URL will take you as there is no “Preview Mode” (you can not see the real web address). In fact, malicious users could send you to an infected webpage or a page which will automatically start downloading a virus or spyware to your computer. Nobody argues that such services are not useful. Actually they are quite necessary om website such as Twitter where you have to optimize what you write cause the limited amount to words you have got. But the downside is that clicking on a short URL is just like playing Russian roulette. You don’t really know where you will go! Luckily there are websites which let you expand the short URL thus allowing you to see the real URL!
Longurl.org is a free website which offers you a very useful service. It expands, shows and previews a short URL. In this way you will be able to understand where you will go or what the website or web page is about! The website also offers you a nice Firefox add-on called LongURL Mobile Expander which “lets you expand shortened URLs on any website, no matter where you go! You can install it as either a Firefox extension or Greasemonkey script. “
