odt online editorA couple of users have asked me where they can find a ODT Editor Online able to read and edit such special documents online.  Files with ODT extension are word processing (text) documents created by Open Document Format for Office Applications (also known as OpenDocument or ODF such as Open Office and Star Office, for example). After having surfed the Internet for a hour, I have come to the conclusion that at the time writing there is not any online tool able to edit ODT.  However I have found a  nice website which offers an online tool able to convert any file to a multitude of file extensions, including the ODT extension. I have also found a couple of interesting free applications which will let you edit, modify and show any ODT file in a very easy way.  Let’s see together where to download such free applications and sorry guys…no online editor available for you so far!

Convert.Files is a great website with a lot of potentialities. In fact, despite it does a good job when it comes to converting documents, it is rather unknown! That said Conver.Files lets you convert a huge variety of files  from…to including the following ones: .doc, .docx, .rtf, .odt, .ods, .xls, .odg, .ppt and many more! The conversion is made on the fly and you also have the option to send a download link embedded to an email to your email account.

TextMaker is a free application able to read, print, convert to PDF a lot of file extensions including our .odt files ( OpenDocument Text). TextMaker Viewer 2010 is not only free of charge but you can also re-distribuite it for free! The application runs on Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.

File Extension .ODT. This extension is for Open Office package. So you will have to download Open Office first and right after that download and install the ODT extension here. Thanks to it you will be able to open, edit, create and print file extension .ODT files.

Extension.nirsoft.net. This webpage contain a comprehensive list of programs and application able to read and edit the .ODT files.

OpenOffice is probably the best freeware I’ve ever found. I recommend it to all my clients. This isn’t any stripped down package – it has all the bells and whistles you could ever want. The only caveat I’ve found is that it doesn’t handle the higher math functions that Excel is able to do. Other than that, it is a perfect example of what freeware can be.
