autosave passwordsI learned this tricks some years ago on Windows 7 and I just found out that it still works on Windows 10 as well. Basically, with the help of your Windows Notepad and a code, you will be able to password protect a folder right on your Desktop. So, why buy expensive software when with a simple 2 minute step-by-step guide you can protect your files for free? Let’s see together how to achieve this result!

  • Open your Windows Notepad and paste this code:

title Folder Secure
if EXIST “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}” goto UNLOCK
echo Are you sure you want to lock the folder(Y/N)
set/p “cho=>”
if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
if %cho%==y goto LOCK
if %cho%==n goto END
if %cho%==N goto END
echo Invalid choice.
ren Secure “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
attrib +h +s “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
echo Folder locked
goto End
echo Enter the Password to unlock folder
set/p “pass=>”
attrib -h -s “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
ren “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}” Secure
echo Folder Unlocked successfully
goto End
echo Invalid password
goto end
md Secure
echo Secure created successfully
goto End

    1. Change the password. On the code, look for “WRITE_PASSWORD_HERE” and change it to a password of your choice.
    2. Save the file as LOCK.dat and from the drop down menu in the Save as Type select:  “All files”.
    3. On your desktop should appear an icon containing two works.
    4. Double click on the LOCK icon on your desktop.
    5. A folder named Secure will be created on your Desktop. This is a password protected folder!
    6. Put whatever you want on that folder. As a rule of thumb make a test first and just put some file you don’t need inside that folder.
    7. Now, we will have to lock the folder. Double click on the LOCK icon again. You will be prompted to lock the folder. Press Y on your keyboard to confirm.
    8. In order to gain access to your locked folder, click the LOCK icon again and when prompted enter your password.
    9. Done!
