googlebotOne of biggest dream of a geek is to have his own computer talks when he turns it on (startup). Wouldn’t you like to have your PC saying something like “Hello! Welcome Back!”? In this way you will have the feeling to be in a movie and have your computer more similar to a cybernetic intelligence than a regular, dumb PC doing whatever you ask. In this article I will show you a step-by-step guide that will turn on a special feature in your Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 (I have not tested it on Windows 10 yet, but it should work though) that will allow your computer to speak and greet you when you turn it on!

  1. Open your Windows Notepad and paste this code:
  2. Dim speaks, speech
    speaks=”Welcome! Write something fun here”
    Set speech=CreateObject(“sapi.spvoice”)
    speech.Speak speaks
  3. Save the file as Welcomebacktoyou.vbs.
  4. Make sure to select from File Type Option: select All Types
  5. If you own WIndows XP, copy the saved file in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  6. If you own WIndows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, copy the file here:  C:\Users\ {User-Name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  7. Note: if you can not see AppData it means that Windows hid it. So go to Folder option and select Show Hidden Files.
  8. Note 2: If you don’t manage to find the  startup folder, press Windows key+R and type shell:startup and just press Enter.
  9. Next time you turn on your PC you will be greeted by a computerized voice!
  10. Note 3: If the trick doesn’t work, just go to Control Panel — Sound and Audio Devices — Audio Tab —  Select No Sound.
  11. Done
