Some time ago I wrote about how to download Garmin Mapsource, just in case you screwed up your Garmin device and you needed to install this important piece of software in the GPS unit again. Since I feel to have written the whole procedure a little too hastily, today I still want to speak about it, but I want to write the whole procedure in detail. Here is what you have to do:

1. Download Garmin Mapsource installer from:http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6137.exe
2. Download and install Winrar here.
3. Run WinRAR, and open “MapSource_6137.exe” (select “All files” at “Files of type”, to view other than normally supported extensions).
4. Click “Extract to” on the Winrar window and put the whole content into a folder located on your desktop preferably.
5. Browse and point to the downloaded “MapSource_6137.exe”, right-click and select “Open with WinRAR” (this will open “MapSource_6137.exe” in WinRAR as above).
6. Click “Extract to” on the Winrar window and put the whole content into a folder located on your desktop preferably.
7. Browse the folder that contains the extracted files and folders, and continue with the above instructions with “MAIN.msi” and “Setup.exe”.

If, after the whole procedure, your get an error like this: “There is a problem with the MapSource installation. Please re-install MapSource and start it again” you have to fully uninstall MapSource, as well as delete any remnant of Mapsource registry entry. Then only re-install MapSource using the method in the first post. If you don’t know how to delete the registry entry, follow these simple steps:

• Click The Start Icon on your desktop
• Type Regedit on Run…
• Find this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SOFTWARE –> Garmin
• Delete the whole Garmin folder

For a lot of years Garmin has been a leader in the GPS devices production, but now it looks like it wants to throw itself in the tough phone-market thanks to the next debut of its new first phone called Novifone. The phone will be available in the Q3 and reading from the Garming press release we know that:
“The nüvifone is an all-in-one device offering unmatched integration of utility and function in a single mobile device,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO. “This is the breakthrough product that cell phone and GPS users around the world have been longing for — a single device that does it all.”

Nuvifone sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 3.5G connectivity, Google local search, email, text, and instant messaging, Built-in video camera, MP3 and MPEG4/AAC. No word on its price has been said yet.

If you own one of the Garmin GPS devices you know pretty well that all of them come with a pre-installed software called MapSource. This software is the heart of Garmin products, since it provides to its users uploads and downloads of lots of files such as: maps, POI, tracks, routes, waypoints etc. Without the program your nice gadget is completely useless. The fact is this: if you screw-up the device or something goes wrong, the only way for you to install MapSource is to use the CD. Luckily for us there is a wonderful hack that avoids a lot of pain and sleepless nights, and that let us download MapSource through the software updater without use the CD (just in case you lost it).
